In the days after a diagnosis, most people describe the same thing: they sit in the appointment, the doctor explains, they nod — and then in the car afterwards they realise they can't remember what was said, and they think of ten questions they wish they'd asked.

That's not a failing. It's what shock and information overload do to anyone. The single most useful thing you can do is walk in prepared, with your questions written down. This guide gives you a starting set, organised by theme. You won't need all of them, and you'll have your own to add — but it's far easier to edit a list than to build one from a blank page in a stressful moment.

A practical tip before the appointment

Three things make these appointments go better:

Write your questions down — prepare them beforehand, and keep the list short enough to actually get through in the time you have.
Bring someone with you — a second person hears what you miss and can take notes while you focus on the conversation.
Ask if you can record it — most doctors are fine with it, so you can revisit what was said later, when you're calmer.

What type of cancer do I have, exactly, and where is it?

The precise name and site shape every decision that follows; "cancer" alone is too broad to act on.

What is the stage and grade, and what do they mean for me?

Are we waiting on any more results before deciding?

Knowing whether the picture is complete tells you whether today's discussion is final or preliminary.

The full set of reasonable paths — not just the one recommended.

What are all my options — not just the one you'd recommend?

There's usually more than one reasonable path, and knowing the full set lets you take part in the choice.

Which do you recommend, and why?

The reasoning behind the recommendation matters as much as the recommendation itself, and helps you understand the trade-offs.

Is this standard treatment, or would I be considering a clinical trial?

It tells you whether you're on a well-established path or an investigational one, each with different things to weigh.

Questions about the goal of treatment

Cure, control, or comfort — making sure you and your doctor aim at the same thing.

What is the goal here — to cure the cancer, to control it, or to relieve symptoms?

This is one of the most important and least-asked questions; it makes sure you and your doctor share the same understanding of what you're aiming for.

How likely is it to achieve that goal?

It sets realistic expectations and helps you make decisions that fit your own priorities.

How will we know if it's working?

Knowing what success looks like, and when it'll be assessed, tells you what to watch for and when.

Questions about side effects and daily life

What to expect, which signs are urgent, and who to call between appointments.

What side effects should I expect, and which ones should I call you about urgently?

Knowing in advance reduces fear and helps you tell normal effects from warning signs that need attention.

How will treatment affect my daily life — work, energy, family, eating?

The practical impact shapes how you prepare, arrange support, and plan the months ahead.

Who do I contact, and how, if something goes wrong between appointments?

Knowing the path before you need it saves precious time in a worrying moment.

Questions about second opinions and time

How long you have to decide — and why asking for another view is routine.

How much time do I have to make this decision?

For most cancers a short time to understand your options doesn't harm outcomes — but it varies, so it's worth confirming rather than assuming.

Would you support me getting a second opinion?

Can you explain or write down anything I didn't follow?

A clear record you can revisit when calmer is worth more than nodding along in the moment.

Don't worry about asking every question on this list in one appointment — that's neither realistic nor necessary. Pick the ones that matter most to you, start there, and remember you can always follow up. The goal isn't to interrogate your doctor; it's to leave the room understanding your situation a little better than when you walked in.

Is it rude to ask my oncologist for a second opinion?

No. Seeking a second opinion is a normal, accepted part of cancer care, and most oncologists expect and support it. It's about your confidence in the plan, not about distrust. A good doctor won't take offence.

How many questions should I bring?

Fewer, well-chosen questions beat a long list you can't get through. Pick the handful that matter most to you, and remember you can always ask more at the next appointment or by contacting the clinic.

Should I bring someone with me?

If you can, yes. A second person hears details you might miss, can take notes, and offers support. Many people find this one of the most helpful things they did.

What if I don't understand the answer?

Say so, and ask your doctor to explain it more simply — that's completely reasonable, and it's their job. You can also ask them to write key things down so you can look them up later.
